The victory of Tunisia: “Kom’Ya, cosmetic recipes from another time combined with the era of our time”

“Kom’Ya”! Those who don’t know the meaning of these two syllables might get confused because they represent the culmination of a long thinking about the best-selling brand name of organic care and cosmetics products.

Kom’Ya » is much more! The name means “Like what my grandmother used to do”. An expression that carries with it a great meaning, that of unshakable links that bind us to our customs, traditions and culture. “Kom’Ya” is a hymn of love for the grandmother, which is expressed not only by hanging a portrait on the wall. A love told by perpetuating the knowledge of ancestors born from a thousand-year-old civilization: that of Tunisia.

It is about three sisters who decided to immortalize their ancestor by perpetuating the long tradition of preparing cosmetic and care products, drawing inspiration from recipes that we thought were forgotten or even outdated and ineffective.

Meryem Aidi, an engineer, Imen Aidi, a dentist and Yosra Aidi, a financier put their hands in the “dough” of the venture. They launched their start-up “Kom’ Ya”.

“Kom’Ya, she looks like a grandmother: a symbol of a healthy beautiful woman, a natural woman! We offer exactly that female universe through “Slow beauty” products. A range of simple, high quality products that combine ancestral recipes with a modern practical dimension. Our products are designed according to the concept of “Do it yourself” and are offered in raw form without industrial processing. We have also given the necessary importance to the sales format: our approach is based on services. We provide our customers with services, advice, recipes and combinations,” says Meriem, who trained as an energy engineer.

Meriem decided to return to Tunisia after 10 years of professional experience in industrial quality management. She previously lived in Italy and France and worked in several countries and on different continents. With considerable experience in the industrial and commercial field, she decided to start her own project. “My dream has always been to return to Tunisia, to create a digital universe with authentic values in the Green Ecosystem.”

As soon as she moved to Tunisia, Meriem started “Kom Y’a”, an ecological and sustainable cosmetics, with her co-founder sisters. “My goal today is to spread the wings of this project around the world, beyond national borders in order to make our knowledge and experience internationally known and highlight our values and advantages in the field of well-being and cosmetics.

“Each well-anchored root can only rise to the heights,” says the Algerian writer Mazouz Hacène, and today the Aidi sisters are like olive trees in Tunisia, a thousand-year-old symbol of peace, fertility and beauty, anchored in the depths of the Earth. They dream of conquering the world, seducing it and introducing it to the riches that the country after which the African continent got its name hides in flora, medicinal resources, vegetable oils and aromatic plants.

“Every time I hear that argan oil is becoming an international brand, I say to myself why not use our wealth. Our nature is rich and we can distill plants and make flower elixirs. We can create international labels,” asks Meriem.

A start-up working for a green and inclusive economy

But make no mistake, the founders of “Kom Y” rely on the past, but combine their activities in the present and the future. They use all technological means to promote their products by using e-commerce, creating blogs, content, using media and using podcasts.

“This universe is also a blog written by a nature lover like me, explains Meriem Aidi. Cover various topics about natural beauty, offer advice, give explanations, advice and much more. Our startup works for a green and circular economy. We choose quality manufacturers for each assortment in our catalog. They are certified suppliers such as jute and olive wood wrapping and packaging small businesses. We try to work in a green ecosystem, helping small entities to present the specialties of each region of Tunisia.

We offer these products under our brand, and especially through our blog, in order to support users in the concept of raw cosmetics. Our strength lies in the use of modern communication tools (all categories of social networks) to promote long-standing heritage products without modification (oils, hydrosols, clay powder, etc.). Kom’Ya is a brand that respects the cosmetic charter “Slow” and strives for this mark with other certificates to conquer the international market.

Cosmetic products are not new. There is a story about a lady from Carthage who used blush and ointments to preserve and maintain her beauty. In ancient Egypt, women used herbal and mineral powders to create make-up products. They knew how to make face masks, lotions, creams, ointments. The Romans were also passionate about cosmetics, just like the Carthaginians.

Cosmetics represent one of the world’s largest industries, there are thousands of brands and their number is still growing. In Tunisia, ambitious, creative and innovative young people venture into entrepreneurship advocating an ecological, humane and for some dreamers or idealists altruistic economy also in a new economic reality that favors a return to nature.

Can we hope for better? Isn’t nature the most beautiful school? The most inspiring?

The Aidi sisters, like many others, decided to return to their roots. Tunisia will win thanks to them.
