As a result, techniques related to ‘lip-combination’ (yes, there are several) are multiplying at a rapid rate on the Asian platform, each one turning out to be more original than the last.
But what is a ‘lip combo’? This technique is based on a trend straight out of the 1990s, which has long been relegated to the background and considered old-fashioned: lip liner. A ‘lip combo’ therefore consists of combining two products to enhance the lips and achieve the desired luscious look, usually a lip liner and gloss or a lip liner and lipstick. This method, which may seem banal to some, is a hit on TikTok, with as many as five billion views for the dedicated hashtag. A true phenomenon that (and) the stars have embraced.
Hailey Bieber, Taylor Swift, RosalÃa, Megan Thee Stallion and Kylie Jenner are among the celebrities who have already embraced the trend, and regularly appear with the ‘lip combo’. American model Emily Ratajkowski even went so far as to share her favorite tips and products in a tutorial posted on TikTok, which has been viewed nearly nine million times. We see her outline her mouth with a lip pencil, then fill it in with a volumizing lip balm. A three-in-one product (moisturizer, plumper, glow) that recalls the popularity of social media users for hybrid cosmetics, combining skin care and make-up, to save time and focus on skin care.
But others take it even further, turning the ‘lip combo’ into an even more fun technique – and paving the way for tricks that could turn out to be as original as they are wacky. This is the case of Sofia Richie who proposed a surprising ‘lip combination’. The young woman abandoned the basic lip pencil to focus on mixing two glossy lipsticks in different shades, decorating everything with a third, much more unexpected product: a concealer or corrector, intended to add a touch of even more gloss and an ombre finish. We realized that anything is possible with a ‘lip combo’ as long as you get glossy and luscious lips in no time.
